Flexible sanitation for unpredictable times.
Container-based sanitation offers reliable services during floods, water shortages, and other disruptions by combining robust design features with adaptable service models. Its portable, low-water, and flood-resistant toilets are supported by provider operations that are flexible, actively managed, and closely connected to the communities they serve.
Our 2025 research with Cranfield University shows how this model works in practice: through flexible operations along with adaptive management and strong community relationships are key to enabling providers to maintain service continuity. Comparative data from Nairobi, Lima, and Cape Town also indicates that CBS users experience fewer disruptions during shocks than those relying on other sanitation options.
