As part of this year’s virtual World Water Week at Home virtual conference, CBSA Chair Kory Russel presented emerging findings from CBSA’s research on CBS GHG emissions.
The presentation was part of the session Convergence of sanitation and climate crises: Disruptive actions and solutions convened by WSSCC, SNV, UK Aid, UNICEF, University of Bristol, University of Leeds, University of Technology Sydney, WaterAid and WHO. The event shared evidence and practical solutions to disrupt the status quo, unlock climate finance and achieve climate resilient inclusive sanitation services that reduce emissions and increase adaptation.
Kory presented Estimating the Climate positive benefits of container-based sanitation in the break out session on mitigation / emissions, looking at the emerging findings of our research on CBS and climate impacts.
The research, supported by WSSCC, estimates emissions from container based sanitation systems compared to typical baseline sanitation alternatives in dense urban areas using a GHG emissions calculator tool.
The calculator uses data on emission factors and assumptions about waste characterisation and energy use from the IPCC, CDM and peer reviewed literature. The calculator was applied to four members (Loowatt, Sanergy, Sanivation, SOIL) of the CBSA as case studies.
