The need for safe, inclusive sanitation has never been more urgent. In cities and informal settlements where conventional solutions are impractical, CBS is delivering safe, dignified services to communities often left behind. In 2024, more than 432,000 people accessed CBS services, showing its growing reach and effectiveness.
CBSA is proud to release Container-based sanitation: State of the sector 2025, highlighting the growing impact of container-based sanitation (CBS) around the world.
Key drivers of sector growth include:
- Momentum in the sector: CBS has grown sixfold since 2019, with stronger performance data, innovative public–private models, and increasing alignment with municipal goals.
- Government adoption: Scaling CBS requires recognition as a mainstream sanitation option, supported through policy, regulation, and planning.
- Innovative financing: Outcome-based funding and climate finance are opening new avenues to support both new and existing CBS providers.
- Climate-smart impact: CBS significantly reduces emissions compared to pit latrines and septic tanks, gaining recognition from the Green Climate Fund.
The report also highlights opportunities to unlock further scale: supporting new operators, strengthening existing providers, encouraging public adoption, and mobilising innovative finance. CBS has proven its value – but realising its full potential depends on collective action from governments, funders, and partners.
Explore the full report for evidence, insights, and a roadmap for accelerating CBS – and join the movement to scale safe, inclusive, and climate-resilient sanitation.
