The climate crisis demands urgent action across all sectors to reduce emissions and adapt to changing climatic conditions and sanitation is no exception. While there are no quick fixes, emerging research shows that actively managed services such as container-based sanitation benefit both adaptation and mitigation and should have the potential to secure valuable – and so far, elusive – sources of climate finance.

Reflections and key messages from a ‘Flush with Success’, a roundtable co-hosted by Cranfield School of Management, Water & Sanitation for the Urban Poor and the CBSA looking at how small and medium-sized social enterprises (SMSE) can help to meet enormous global sanitation challenges.
In 2022, the CBSA worked with the carbon finance consultancy South Pole on a feasibility study to understand whether carbon credits could become a viable income stream for sanitation providers and help to reduce the funding gap. Our new briefing paper summarises the study’s findings, which found that carbon credits can generate revenue for actively managed sanitation but that several obstacles hinder the full potential.
